How could a benign, almighty god create evil?

Simply put--God created the world and He created it to be good. But He gave us a choice, free will--to choose good or evil. If you read in Genesis back in the Garden on Eden when Adam and Eve ate the apple, they were the ones who brought evil into the picture. They chose evil. Not God.
